On January 22, Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to meet with congressional leaders. Mayor Moore is seeking $92.4 million for Elkhart in hopes of revitalizing the city's economy. These critical funds would come from President-elect Barack Obama's proposed multi-billion dollar stimulus bill. If awarded, the funds would allow Elkhart to complete eighteen infrastructure projects, resulting in the creation of 2,310 jobs.
This new year is especially significant. Most notably, January 2009 marks the inauguration of a new President, the implementation of a new administration, and the swearing in of a new Congress. President-elect Barack Obama has stated that he will sign the economic recovery plan bill "shortly after taking office" so that "we can start putting people back to work." Let us hope that the new year ushers in a period of economic growth for our country.
