2009 4th Quarter Hiring Forecast

According to the "Q4 2009 U.S. Job Forecast" from CareerBuilder / USA Today, fourth quarter hiring forecast indicates optimism and hope for businesses in our country.

Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder, stated "Companies are switching their focus from cost containment to growth. Employers who have instituted pay cuts or layoffs in the last year are reporting that they have begun to restore compensation levels and rehire employees. While these are positive indicators, the pace of hiring will remain restrained. It will take time to rebuild the confidence needed in the nation's economy to trigger more robust recruitment programs."

Here's a brief synopsis of expected employer trends in 2009 fourth quarter:

  • 10% Expect to decrease headcount
  • 17% Plan to add full-time regular employees
  • 68% Report stability-no change in their workforce
  • Flexibility. Firms can use outsourcing to achieve great flexibility.
  • 22% of employers with more than 250 employees expect to add full-time regular positions in the next three months, up from 17% in the third quarter
  • 17% of companies with 51 - 250 employees plan to add headcount this quarter, which is unchanged from third quarter additions
  • 10% of companies with 1 - 50 employees plan to increase staff for fourth quarter.

From these statistics, restrained growth appears to be the trend as we move closer to 2010.
